Just go to spotlight and type in text and it should come up for you. In my experience it perfectly open.txt, rtf.doc,.docx files. You can also save in these formats also. But if you will be getting into any heavy formatting then go with the LibreOffice for a free source. If you don't mind paying then they have Microsoft Office for Mac.
